The Boat Parade's Last Half Hour Runs Past Newport Heights

The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs December 16 through 20, 2026. Each night it leaves the tip of Lido Isle at about 6:30 p.m. and comes back to the same spot around 9:00. The order of the route matters most for Newport Heights. The boats go out through the Rhine Channel and down the Balboa Peninsula, around the point and China Cove, then around Balboa Island. They pass under the PCH bridge and run along Mariners' Mile only at the end of the loop.

So the stretch of harbor at the bottom of the neighborhood gets the last half hour of each night. On the official 2026 parade map, the boats reach the PCH bridge at 8:26 p.m. and Mariners' Mile at 8:42. That's about an hour and a half after they reach the Balboa Fun Zone at 7:15 and about half an hour after they leave Balboa Island's north bayfront at 8:07. Because of that, a Newport Heights parade night is a late evening close to home. You can eat dinner first and still have time to spare.

The clock below the bluff

The official 2026 parade map gives a time for each point on the route. Here's the final stretch, from Harbor Island back to Lido:

  1. 8:18 p.m. Harbor Island
  2. 8:26 p.m. Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina at the PCH bridge
  3. 8:30 p.m. Bay Shores Community Beach
  4. 8:35 p.m. Balboa Bay Resort
  5. 8:38 to 8:39 p.m. Orange Coast College's crew base and Newport Sea Base
  6. 8:42 p.m. City Cruises on Mariner's Mile
  7. 8:43 p.m. Rusty Pelican
  8. 8:44 p.m. Billy's at the Beach and Louie's by the Bay
  9. 8:45 p.m. The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar
  10. 8:46 to 8:48 p.m. Lido Marina Village, Malibu Farm, Lido Bottle Works and HanaHaus
  11. 8:50 p.m. Lido Park at the Lido Bridge
  12. 8:53 p.m. Via Lido North Genoa Beach
  13. 9:00 p.m. Finish at the tip of Lido Isle

Earlier in the evening, the boats are far from Newport Heights. At 7:54 the parade is at Balboa Island's south bayfront and Grand Canal, and at 8:01 it's at the island's ferry landing. Those are crowded spots, and the boats get there long before they reach Mariners' Mile. Newport Heights households have the shortest trip to the water and the latest start time of any part of the route.

These times are estimates. The parade site tells everyone to arrive early for the best viewing and parking. Watching from shore is free, and the official route page says city parking lots will be open during the parade. If you're walking down from the bluff, our earlier post on the walk down Cliff Drive to Mariners' Mile covers how that corridor is changing at street level.

Why 8:15 sets the evening

Drone shows give this end of the harbor a set start time. The parade organizers now run holiday drone shows from two places each night of the parade, Balboa Bay Resort and Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone, so you can see one from either end of the harbor.

The schedule fits the late arrival on Mariners' Mile. According to the parade's homepage, the Balboa Bay Club show runs at 8:15 p.m. every night of the parade. The early show is at 6:00 p.m. on opening night and 6:15 p.m. on the other four nights. The 8:15 show starts 20 minutes before the lead boats pass Balboa Bay Resort at 8:35. If you're on the water below Newport Heights around 8:10, you'll see the drone show and then the boats.

The Peninsula Park shows run at 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. each night. They're timed for people watching near the Fun Zone, where the boats pass at 7:15. Opening night also has fireworks off the Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, if safety guidelines allow. Seeing the fireworks means an early night on the ocean side of the Peninsula. The 8:15 drone show is the one that fits a Mariners' Mile evening.

Dinner on the water, timed to the boats

The 8:42-to-8:48 run along Mariners' Mile and Lido Marina Village has more official Dine & Watch restaurants packed close together than any other part of the route. The parade's restaurant list gives each one a pass time. Rusty Pelican is at 8:43. Billy's at the Beach and Louie's by the Bay are at 8:44, and The Winery is at 8:45. Lido Marina Village is at 8:46, Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works at 8:47, and HanaHaus at 8:48. A Balboa Bay Resort listing is at 8:35. Near the PCH bridge, Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina are both on the map at 8:26.

Late pass times change how you can plan a reservation. A table on the Peninsula side, at Woody's Wharf or the Peninsula Village restaurants, means eating in the 6:50 window, close to when the parade starts. Along Mariners' Mile, a 7:15 or 7:30 seating leaves time for a full dinner before the boats arrive. Bookings still fill quickly. The official viewing-restaurants page says so plainly:

"These fine waterfront restaurants fill up early, so don't forget to book your reservations, now!"

This post goes out at the end of October, about seven weeks before opening night. That's early enough to get the night and time you want.

Choosing a night

The 2026 parade starts one calendar day earlier than last year's. The 2025 parade ran December 17 to 21. This year's runs Wednesday, December 16, through Sunday, December 20. It's still five nights in a row, and it still starts and finishes at Lido at about 6:30 p.m. With the earlier dates, Sunday's parade is on December 20, a few days before Christmas, for anyone working around family travel.

Here's what's different about each night, based on the published schedule:

  • Wednesday, December 16: Fireworks off the Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m. The Balboa Bay Club drone shows are at 6:00 and 8:15 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 17, through Sunday, December 20: The Balboa Bay Club drone shows are at 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. The Peninsula Park shows are at 6:45 and 8:00 p.m.

The parade's dedicated grand marshals page lists the 2026 lineup as "coming soon." That page and the route and schedule page are the places to check for updates as December gets closer.

The Ring of Lights deadline comes first

The parade also runs the Ring of Lights competition, which is open to waterfront homes, businesses and yacht clubs. That includes many of the restaurants and clubs on the late stretch of the route. Entry costs $35. There are judged categories and prizes, and entrants may be featured on the live parade broadcast.

Both Ring of Lights dates fall in the week before opening night. According to the Ring of Lights entry page, entries must reach the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce by noon on Friday, December 11, 2026. Decorations must be up for judging on Monday, December 14, two days before opening night. If your property is on the water, the lights need to be up the weekend before the parade, not opening week.

From the bluff, the boats passing below get to Mariners' Mile by 8:42 and the tip of Lido Isle by 9:00.
